On Dec. 24, 2010, the turfgrass academic community lost one of its brightest young scholars, when James Christopher(Chris) Stiegler and his wife, Jenny, were killed in an automobile accident. The Chris Stiegler Turfgrass Science Graduate Student Travel Award was created to honor Chris' major contributions to the Division C5 Turfgrass Science of CSSA as a graduate student to further encourage future scholars to participate in our meetings.

The Stiegler Golf Tournament was first established in 2012 and draws together best turfgrass scientists from Universities and Industry to honor the Stieglers and support the Fund.  This year, the golf fundraiser will be held at the Sparrows Point Country Club as a 4-person scramble with awards for the winning team and other contests.

In 1926, Sparrows Point Country Club was founded for executives of Bethlehem Steel to recreate and socialize.  In 1952, the booming steel mill needed room to expand, so they purchase a 250-acre, waterfront parcel for a new club. The Club hired famed architects William and David Gordon who built/renovated courses such as the Stanwich Club, Saucon Valley Country Club (Weyhill & Grace Courses), Sunnybrook Golf Club and DuPont Course at DuPont Country Club.

Today, SPCC is one of the finest Club facilities of its kind in the state. The 27-hole golf course ranks among the most challenging in Maryland and the 18th hole has been called "one of the finest finishing holes in Maryland.” Our Club overlooks the scenic Chesapeake Bay tributary, Bear Creek and includes amenities such as a waterfront Olympic-sized pool, a 62-slip deep water basin, lighted Har-Tru tennis, long and short game practice areas, and a clubhouse that serves outstanding casual to fine dining.

Sparrows Point Country Club is positioned to be the premier social, recreational entertainment space during Tradepoint Atlantic's reinvention of Bethlehem Steel as the largest intermodal redevelopment in the country.
